MYASTHENIA GRAVIS

Myasthenia Gravis (MG) is a neuromuscular condition which is characterized by episodic muscle weakness, affecting those muscles which are chiefly supplied by cranial (nerves of the head) nerves. It is considered to be an autoimmune disorder, where antibodies are formed against the acetyl chorine receptors which are required in nerve conduction or nerve stimulation. This results into abnormal neuromuscular transmission. That is, it results in abnormal functions of the affected muscles. It affects normal communication between muscles and nerves in the body and is characterized by varying degrees of weakness of muscles that is aggravated with exertion and recovers after rest.
The disease can occur at all ages, but is more common in young and middle aged adults. The common symptoms of the condition include drooping of eyelids, double vision, and strabismus, difficulty in eye closure. The smile is distorted along with difficulty in chewing hard food. Voice become low and may fade away on continuous speaking. There is difficulty getting up from squatting position or climbing steps.
The disease is caused by disturbances in body's defense system where body's own immune system starts attacking body¡¯s own organs and tissues. Moreover factors like emotional stress, pregnancy, and extremes of temperature may aggravate the symptoms.
Homeopathic approach and scope: Myasthenia Gravis is an autoimmune disorder, which means that there is a fault with the immune system, guided by genetic tendencies and other general factors. In other words, MG is a constitutional disorder, where the whole constitution needs to be addressed with the treatment. MG is a progressively deteriorating condition, calling for some measures to arrest or control the disease process. Homoeopathic treatment being constitutional in nature, treats the disease at a deeper level, to achieve the following:
1.) Control of the disease process
2.) Symptomatic relief
Homoeopathy has shown its efficacy in reducing the frequency of relapses and improving the power and tone of muscles. However, it may be noted that the improvement with homoeopathy may not be as fast as one achieved by using the immunosuppressive medicines. The role of homoeopathy is more as long term control, rather than for acute crisis control. Homoeopathy with its constitutional approach works at deeper level and brings deviations of immune system back to normalcy and in consequence minimizes the need of exogenous neurotransmitters or steroids as prescribed by conventional treatment.
